Trabia still got hit, so not exactly brilliant.

I've known about the "Daryl is Gogo" theory for a long time too and I've never, ever bought into it. Gogo is a reference to a character from Final Fantasy V, he is not Daryl.
Oh, and by the way, Dale, a racer who actually is dead? Aeris. And yet you didn't cite any problem with the idea of using her.
Anyways... I'll just post some slapdash comments for each team, as is my wont...
Cloud and Aeris - I don't personally have any strong feelings about this team. Cloud I neither like nor dislike. As for Aeris, I found her the least interesting of the main female characters, though I don't really dislike her either. Both are familiar with making their way out of tight situations, so that could offer an advantage to them. I think both have also proven that they're willing to take risks when necessary. If they can play those strengths to their advantages, they could go far.
Vaan and Penelo - Vaan... eh, but I'm actually rather fond of Penelo. I think this team's biggest strength is that they are both good friends and therefore will probably be largely free of drama. Both are also very accomplished world travelers, though for my money their world doesn't offer much of the strange compared to many of the other Final Fantasy worlds, so it'll be interesting to see how they adjust. They are young, and strong, though youth and strength aren't always advantages...
Cid and Hilda - I see them lasting maybe four and five legs before they are gone. Both have gone through a lot, but I don't think that necessarily equates to strength for the race in this case. Cid possesses a brilliant mind, though, and I think that may be what keeps this team around for a while. But Hilda has been known to be impulsive, while Cid is easily distracted by the women...
Selphie and Irvine - If it's all about teams that don't have weaknesses, rather than so much ones that have strengths, then this team is out the door early. Selphie is a firecracker, who will too often dive into situations without taking the time to think. That could be a big liability. Conversely, Irvine is known for his crippling hesitancy, and I'm not sure he ever really got over it. It's a shame, though, because I'm a big Selphie fan and I don't mind Irvine, so I'd love to see this team stick around for a while.
Malak and Rafa - I haven't played Tactics, I don't know anything about them. A total wildcard. Everyone else seems to be dismissing them as either a joke or an unknown, so that's what I'm going to do too. Still, since I don't know anything about them, it might be nice to see them hang around for two or three legs, if they do turn out to be interesting or amusing.
Lucil and Elma - In terms of weaknesses, they really aren't known to have any. Lucil is an intensely strong and able commander & figher, while Elma is nearly as strong and intensely loyal to Lucil. If there is a weakness, I'd say it'd be maybe if any other teams (perhaps Tidus and Wakka?) recognize their strength and peg them as a threat to try to remove. They could make the top three, but I don't think they'll win, for at least a couple of reasons.
Blank and Marcus - These two sneaky thieves could stand a fairly good shot. I don't see much in the way of arguing with each other and they could easily use their charm to worm their way into the other teams' good graces. Their ability to use deceptiveness could work to their advantage, if the other teams don't cotton on to it.
Kiros and Ward - In terms of weaknesses, I think we all know that the biggest weakness is Ward not being able to speak. Still, these two are accomplished soldiers and do work well together. I give them a few legs.
Godo and Yuffie - I'm a huge Yuffie fan, so I'd love it if this team did well. But I just don't know about their chances. The two characters have been argumentative in the past and that could easily surface during the race, leading to a big meltdown. But if they can overcome that, they could really be ones to watch out for. Maybe upper middle of the pack for this team.
Tidus and Wakka - Well, I've already posted some thoughts about these two elsewhere, but just to reiterate-- their biggest strengths are that they're seasoned world-travelers and both are used to overcoming adversity. They also encountered their fair share of surprises along their journey. Tidus's weakness is his impulsiveness, just like Selphie, while Wakka, again, has been known at times to be slowed down by his anxieties and uncertainties. Still, these two balance each other and I suspect minimal inter-team conflict. I think they could be pretty far up there, but maybe not quite making it as far as the final three.
Celia and Lede - And here we are with the wildcard again. I just don't really know much about them, but unlike the other Tactics team, some of the others here seem to like their chances. So, who knows-- this one could have a good shot.
Setzer and Daryl - Hmm, this team's fate could be determined by luck, and they'd like it that way. These two wandering gamblers are definitely a wild card. I really can't call this one-- maybe somewhere right in the middle.
Oh, and Dale-- the Trabia-targeted missiles were launched well before Selphie's team ever arrived at the base. If you'll recall, they were all standing around just after they escaped, trying to decide to do. And then they see the missiles shooting off and Irvine comments "I heard they were hitting Trabia first, and then Balamb."

Dale: Firstly, you gotta learn to read sarcasm. Secondly, ditto Agent's comment. Those missiles weren't able to be stopped by Selphie. Selphie's actions only helped in slowing down the missiles to Balamb. Agent: I never bought into the Gogo is Daryl stuff either. Nothing about Gogo and his mimicking ability says Daryl, so he's an obvious shot-back to FF5's Gogo. I was mostly mentioning it because the #1 part of that theory is that nobody said Daryl was dead. All: Fun reading all your picks, especially since I've already finished an entire episode, so I know a little bit of what happens already. In like, 5 days they start being posted! Woo!

I know only one part of one episode is up, but this season is already lookin' sexy. Nice to have AFFR back. Already it's looking like I'll have to adjust some picks. *shakes fist at Bob*

I've only had a chance to read some of it so far, but I have to agree that it's off to a great start. And I agree that it's looking sexy-- I love the new look to the program with the graphical route-markers and Gippal-boxes.

I decided that it was time to exploit more HTML. This isn't a book, so I can play with images and such (not that you can't in a book, but still, not as common practice). I'm actually going to alter them slightly to have less unused space (I started applying them to larger blocks of text and they look dumb), but the idea will stay.
Glad to hear it's being liked so far!
