I think they heard you were planning on letting TGP run out and were like, "No. NO! That can't happen!"

I saw this on Facebook but had yet to watch the trailer. I think I'm more excited for the Midgar stage than Cloud But as cool as this looks, what do Cloud and even Ryu have to do with Nintendo? FF7 was the first FF game to tell Nintendo to eff off. Solid Snake really opened a can of worms back in Brawl... Looks cool, just high on the "WHY?" scale.

For Ryu, SNES was pretty much what got SF going, plus, they already had Mega Man, so the Capcom connection couldn't have been that hard to link.
As for Cloud, I know FF7 was originally supposed to be on a Nintendo console, but I think it all boils down to two words: Kingdom Hearts.

Yeah, KH is the only good connection. Still weird though. Is KH even all that related to Nintendo? It's probably more Playstation than Nintendo... But again, Solid Snake will always be a weirder pick than anything.
The weirdest thing about all these oddball DLC characters is that they almost cheapen Smash by showing they can make all these different characters. In the main series, Ness was interesting for having such an interesting mechanic. Now, another guy with a sword, upward slash for his double, like all those Fire Emblemers. Yawn. Err, I mean, Cloud! Take my money and my virginity!

I think Cloud's addition to Smash highlights the difference between Square and Square-Enix. Square had integrity and vision and when Nintendo wanted them to make a family-friendly FF7, they put up deuces and headed over to Sony. SE has no integrity or vision and just sells their IPs to whoever will pay for them.
They could have made Cloud more interesting by having his main sword attacks be slower and stronger, like make him into a Gandondorf of swordsmen. Then include more ranged magic attacks and stuff so that he's more unique. As it is, like Bob said, he looks like another Fire Emblemer. Also I wish his Midgar stage wasn't just another "flat base with three platforms arranged in a triangle" shape. They could have done a lot more than that.
