We kinda need a general "discussion" thread. All the rest of our major threads serve specific purposes. Reviews, rants, news for my stuff, news for Bob's stuff etc. So this is just a "here's a thing, what do you guys think?" thread.
Anyway, I just heard that Disney has bought Lucasfilm for around 4 billion dollars. At first I thought it was a joke, but a quick google search reveals that just about every major news source is covering this, so if it is a joke, it's one hell of an elaborate one.
At first I thought, "OH NO," then I thought, "Wait... maybe," and then I thought, "Or maybe not..." And now I'm not sure either way.
I first thought OH NO because years and years of training have made me associate Disney with Mickey Mouse and Hannah Montana and whatnot. I thought, "Oh crap, they're gonna replace all the lightsabers with walkie-talkies or something."
But then I remember Kingdom Hearts (the original, before the idea was beaten to death and buried in J-Pop and Anime stereotypes) and other Disney franchises that are actually really good. And I also took a moment to remember that George Lucas sure as shit ain't doing anything good with his own franchise, so it's not like Disney can really do worse.
But then I thought, "Or maybe not," because I really think that the Star Wars franchise should have stayed with the original trilogy. As Cracked.com and a billion other websites have already pointed out, there's nowhere to really go with the franchise that hasn't been done. Prequel or Sequel, the plot of Star Wars almost inevitably repeats itself. Try to create a sequel to Star Wars that DOESN'T use a rebirth of the Empire or a rebirth of the Sith. You really can't, unless you go off in some crazy direction.
So now I don't know. So I appeal to you, my only friends in the world, to help me make sense of this chaos. What say you?

Supposedly there's lot of extended universe books and everything, I've heard often and loudly that the saga of Thrawn (whatever that is) is likely to be what they end up doing for the next three movies. I'm not exactly stoked that Disney bought out lucasfilm, but on the other hand, they bought Marvel already, and that hasn't gone to shit. And as you pointed out, Lucas sure isn't doing much with Star Wars. There hasn't exactly been much in terms of Star Wars really going anywhere since Episode 3 ended.
If it means I get to see more light saber battles and games like Jedi Academy or Battlefront, then I'm fine with it. If the movies turn out to be terrible (though at least George isn't writing them this time) then it won't diminish the original stuff. I feel like it's a similar direction that Final Fantasy took. The newer games likely won't ever be as good as VI - X. Versus I still have high hopes for, but even if future titles don't get better, the old ones will still be there and still be just as good.

Jedi Knight 2 had no business being as good as it was. I mean, you get good Star Wars games, and then you get Jedi Knight 2. Battlefront was also good, but I preferred classic Battlefield 1942. I still play BF1942 with friends sometimes, that and BF Vietnam were the only ones we really got into.
On topic, I hadn't heard about Disney taking over, but they've certainly got a lot more credibility than George Lucas these days. Also, Disney managed to prove with 'Tangled' that they aren't totally reliant on Pixar, and can actually still produce good retellings of classic tales like they used to, but with a modern twist. And I watched that expecting a whole lotta sucking. I blame the trailer - anything that uses Pink's 'Trouble' song in the trailer always rings alarm bells in my head, like it's trying too hard to make it seem cool.

I can't remember the last Star Wars game that I played any significant amount of. I think the old school (and awesome) SNES Empire Strikes Back was the last one I remember clearly. My brother had a couple that I spent a few minutes with, but I don't remember any of them. Perhaps Disney can do with Star Wars games what they did with Kingdom Hearts.
And I got your back on this one, Count. Tangled was way better than I thought it would be.

Does this make Leia a Disney princess?

For non-CA people that might not know, Disney has always had a sorta-stake in Star Wars. At Disneyland, there's "Star Tours," the motion-simulator ride that has Artoo and Threepio in the hallways and basically simulates an idiot robot flying you straight through the Death Star invasion by accident.
Also, there's a Jedi Academy now at Disneyland where kids can train to be Jedi. I don't have much info on this because I haven't been there since they've had it (also it's for like, five year olds), but it exists. So they've been bffs with Star Wars for awhile. Doesn't explain why they'd buy it, but it at least explains that there's a connection.
And I kinda hope she isn't a Disney princess, but she might be. Hell, her mom could be, too, depending on what movie you're lookin' at...I think. Padme was a princess in the early ones, right? *shrug* I've tried my best to ignore the plot of those.

Well, be warned. They've announced that they're making Star Wars VII, VIII and IX.

The Biebs is the man. I actually don't have any strong feelings whatsoever about JB - I admire the fact that he apparently rose to stardom from being really good on youtube videos, which is badass and feels like the emerging story of the generations immediately succeeding us (and I'm jealous I was born just a bit too soon, but not really jealous at all, because who wants to have been 6 in 2001? I mean really.), but on the flipside, I know next to nothing about his music except that it's preteen fodder, but then again so too was MLP at first. Anyway, the kid seems to have a decent sense of humor about himself, which is always a plus in my book, and the 'Ice, ice, baby, baby, baby' is already a classic in my head.

I just know that when Fleck posted that picture, I looked at my wife and said "Yes! I'm NOT the only one who thinks his new haircut looks like Vanilla Ice!" Thus, again, proving that Fleck and I need to expand our social circles before we BECOME each other.

Damn it, Bob. I TOLD you the Soul-Merging Ritual was a bad idea!
I don't have any feelings of Bieb's the person either. Eventually I'm going to get around to writing up my ideas about where and how much an artist and their work overlap, and where the line is between "criticism of an artistic work" and "criticism of an artist."
But when I say, "I hate JB and I hope he suffers," I really mean "I hate JB's music, and if it were a physical thing that I could strangle, I would be strangling it at this moment." I had to suffer through MULTIPLE JB SONGS and a cover of "Baby" while I worked at Toys R Us, and I have a great deal of hatred for his music. But Bieber the real life human? I have no opinion whatsoever.

But it looked so fun on DBZ!
I barely know Bieber songs. I've heard Baby like, once? Not sure if I've even heard it in full. For such a sensation, it's amazing I've avoided his songs so well by accident.

For such a sensation, it's amazing I've avoided his songs so well by accident. Seconded, although he did a song on season 1 of the X Factor which was pretty good, at least performance wise.
