To be fair though, the Dreamcast was a solid console. It had great specs, first ever console to have internet support... it just had no games.
I think it could well go the way of Sega consoles though. Literally all PS4 needs to do to win the console war now is say it's a PS3 with better specs.
I've also seen that episode of Jimquisition! I didn't post that here though since his flavour of rants are very much an acquired taste. He's improved a hell of a lot since he started the show though.

I think one of the biggest things that killed the Dreamcast was the fact that it couldn't play DVDs. I remember back then a new DVD player cost almost 2/3 of a console, so if you were planning on buying both a DVD player and a console, the wise choice was PS2. And everyone who didn't care about DVDs ended up buying a Gamecube, leaving poor Sega howling alone.
I suppose the point I'm making when I compare the demise of the Dreamcast with my predicted demise of the Xbox One is that both consoles are/were innovating in areas no one wanted, and lacking in areas people do want. As Jimquistition points out, anyone who has the money for an Xbox One already has all the add-ons and features from their TV and smartphones and the One is just going to uselessly try to muscle in on well-trodden ground. Furthermore, NO ONE LIKES THE GODDAMN KINECT! It doesn't matter if Microsoft bolts it to the console, offers free blowjobs to people who buy Kinect, or just leave random Kinects at people's doors, it's a garbage system that barely functions.
And the things people DO want are better games and whatnot, which is a problem for the current gen already, and one I don't see getting fixed next gen.
In short, I really hope the One fails miserably. I've never liked Xbox or its exclusives (except Halo, but only the first Halo) and I'll be glad to see Microsoft humbled. Of course, if Microsoft ends up bowing out of the console wars altogether, I think it'll only be a matter of time before Apple starts throwing a console at us.
And thus the Apocalypse will begin.

Dare I say... the Applecalypse?
...come on, you know someone had to say it.

I have, so far, managed to do a pretty good job of keeping Apple and Microsoft out of my life, thus hopefully buying me a few more hours of life in the inevitable Applecalypse. My laptop is a Toshiba, my cell phone is a Samsung, my MP3 player is a Sony, my camera is a Kodak, my TV is a Philips, and my console is a Playstation.
Unfortunately, Google is working its way into my life, because my site uses Blogger, so I constantly get harassed when I make updates to my site or check out Youtube.
"HEY HEY! Have you tried Google +? How's about switching your browser to Google Chrome?"
No, fuck off, Google.

You presumably use Windows though, Fleck? So Microsoft is in your life to a degree That being said, your probably like me in that your relationship with Microsoft begins and ends with their OS. After having endless trouble with the first 'games for windows live' game I purchased, I've adamantly refused to buy any more with Microsoft's label. Luckily Steam has often adapted these older games to their own service now though. As for Google, I DO get annoyed with them constantly trying to link everything together, but Chrome is a beast of a browser.

Unfortunately, yeah, I've got Windows. Fortunately my laptop only has Windows 7, so I haven't had to personally wrestle with the nightmare that is 8. I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be glad to have Windows 7, but here we are...

Windows 7 isn't bad at all once you get used to it. It's slightly different from XP, but the majority of things are where you'd expect them to be. Definitely an improvement on Vista, and miles ahead of Windows 8 from what I've seen.
It's also highly preferable to Mac OS. Not sure about Ubuntu, not tried that one.

I'm finally getting the hang of my desktop and converted it to a better format. One that auto-loads the desktop and doesn't nag me for passwords all the time. Still annoying with all the pop-up/stick-outs whenever my mouse is on any edge of the damn screen.

NOTICE:
Anyone who is interesting in reading/watching Game of Thrones but hasn't yet, BEWARE! The internet is currently EXPLODING with spoilers, because the HBO series finally reached one of the biggest moments in the series, and people who watch the show but didn't read the books are throwing hissy fits everywhere. If you want to avoid spoilers, it's best to run screaming away from anything marked "Game of Thrones" for the next few weeks. Seriously, even some news organizations are reporting on it, so stay away.
Just a heads up.

www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/7417-Next-Gen-Buyers-GuideIs it weird that I'm getting a strange sort of pleasure from watching all this backlash against next-gen consoles? I mean, it's almost universal disdain for all three entrants. This has got to be unprecedented. We are LIVING IN HISTORICAL TIMES! The only people I know who like the Wii U are Game Grumps (who absolutely could not stop gushing about it when it came out), but they played like, two games for the Wii U and haven't touched it since, which I think says a lot more than their commentary ever did. "This console is AWESOME! Let's never play it again!"

It's certainly something. It's looking like PC may become top dog at this rate.
You know what makes me happy about this though? At the start of the last console generation, PC gaming was in a sorry state. Piracy was rampant, people weren't making games for it, and steam was only really a platform for running Valve's own titles. I remember thinking that PC gaming was dead, and was quite sad about it.
Now look at it! Steam's become the best gaming distribution service ever (I'm gonna state that as fact, not opinion), simultaneously doing away with most of the piracy issues PC faced and making it more accessible to gamers and developers than ever before. It's been a huge turnaround.
With Valve's plans to release their 'steambox' by the end of the year, they could end up completely dominating the gaming market. For those who don't know, it's a great idea - it's pretty much a console, but with access to Steam's full library, and will link to peoples' current steam accounts. It has console-style controllers, hooks up to your TV, and has all the main advantages of consoles, i.e. that you don't have to worry much about the hardware, or dealing with PC's complexities in general. It'll also be cross-platform, allowing steambox owners to play alongside those playing on the PC, meaning that there will never be stagnated online communities, unless the game itself flops hard. If Valve market this thing well enough, I think it could well end up being the new king of the console market.
If this does happen, we just have to hope Gabe Newell and Valve continue to be the Santa Claus of the gaming world, and don't become like Blizzard did when they got too successful and merged with Activision.

Ever since consoles first started coming out with internet connection capabilities, back with Dreamcast and such, I've figured that eventually consoles and PC would merge somehow. With both Xbox One and PS4 basically trying to be PCs at this point (from what I've heard about PS4's social media aspect, it sounds basically like a computer), it seems like we're on the brink of that merger. I've got a feeling that the generation after this is just going to have Sony and Microsoft putting out computers that focus on gaming, while Nintendo does whatever the hell it wants.

That video sums up why I don't have a 360. I mean that legitimately, too. I enjoyed Halo. My wife really wants Fable 2 and 3, despite sub-par reviews. We considered hooking up a 360 in our bedroom for Netflix and Fables and maybe Halos (and any other XBoxcluisives), but then we heard about XBox Live fees and said "Oh helllll no." I'd rather get a cheap PC and hook it up in the bedroom. Or, as we'd discussed, a SECOND PS3! Yeah, I'd rather have A SECOND PS3's than an XBox 360 because of that insane fee. Because, guess what? After a little more than two years of paying for XBox Live, you can afford a PS3! Mmm, math.
So I'm down with Francis. And like much of the world, I'm not psyched about PS4, nor XBox Three. By the way, anybody else hoping for some irony? Hoping that XBox One is the last XBox ever made? I don't mean to be mean and wish them ill, but their company's metaphorical boat is taking on water right now and it'd be great if their last console's name was "first xbox."
Know who ARE kind of psyched about the PS4? High school boys. The boys in my class that really know video games are not on board with the next gen stuff, but a good portion of those...umm...let's call them "Black Ops" Gamers, are really stoked about PS4 announcements. And I'm just like *yawn*
I'm actually going off the deep end on video games. I plan to write something for the site about how we're in the end days of video games. I think they'll come back into their own, but only once they back off on a few things. But time will tell, I suppose.
Maybe I'll write that now...maybe.
