Aw, my favourites! Is there some element of randomness in your decisions for winners then Bob? Also, I'm now rooting for Irvine and Selphie! Sticking with FF8. The game had its flaws, but damn if it didn't have some likeable supporting characters! Season 4 needs a Laguna team!

Heh, I considered Laguna, but I'm playing him in Mallboro, so I figured that was enough. There is some randomness to be had, but only a little. It was more situational. Probably 90% of the races were determined by me picking which one would be faster and most able to win. After that, the wrestling ring clue-finding was randomized entirely, and on a scale of 1-20 (20 being bad, 1 being good), I believe Setzer and Daryl scored about a 3, while Kiros/Ward were closer to 17. . . . So yeah, it was luck. I was sad to see 'em go. They were one of my favorite teams out the gates, too. Same with Setzer and Daryl were another favorite, so when it was down to those two, I was like And yes, FF8 had good supporting cast. Too bad they weren't really seen much. Stupid Squall.

Well, I've turned around on things. I still feel part one was way too rushed. But part two moved along at just the right pace, so I liked this one much better! But damn, Bob, if you didn't make yourself look like a bit of a hypocrite. (Just a bit, not a major one.) In our AIM chats, you distinctly said you HATED that twist when TAR10 used it. Yet, you have no problem using it here. And sad. I really liked them, but the cards fell that way... Bullshit. That was (or at least felt like) just as blatant a save for Setzer & Daryl as all the saves you gave Biran & Yenke late in the race last season. And why are we talking about this in the "Bet Your Place!" thread when this is just for betting places?

Well, I've turned around on things. I still feel part one was way too rushed. But part two moved along at just the right pace, so I liked this one much better! Glad you like it. I realized a flaw with my first part was that I think I cut it off just a bit too early. The intro of Setzer/Daryl DID have meaning because it caused the early ouster, but that wasn't clear until the second part. Probably should've changed where it was chopped, but Part 2 is already the shortest part (I think). But damn, Bob, if you didn't make yourself look like a bit of a hypocrite. (Just a bit, not a major one.) In our AIM chats, you distinctly said you HATED that twist when TAR10 used it. Yet, you have no problem using it here. The thing I didn't love about TAR10's early elimination was that it had very little skill to it, but still, I didn't mind it so much. I really hated the early ouster in TAR15, and that was entirely because it was a luck thing. I suppose it was a semi-intelligence thing because the symbols were right on the clue, but still, very little skill. What I wanted to do was basically use it as a way to make a season of 11 teams, but instead of choosing between the 12 I'd selected, I wanted to let natural selection take its course. Bullshit. That was (or at least felt like) just as blatant a save for Setzer & Daryl as all the saves you gave Biran & Yenke late in the race last season. Heh, still stuck on the Biran/Yenke stuff, eh? They stuck around for being physically strong and following teams. Who needs navigational sense if you just follow somebody that HAS said sense? It was sad to me because Kiros/Ward and Setzer/Daryl were a couple of my favorite teams out the gates (spoiler alert (not really): that has changed), so when it came down to those two, I was very sad. There were actually a few other teams that I wasn't really feeling and would've preferred to be out, but they were doing way too well. ......But I do hate black people. So Kiros had to go. The only thing worse than black people are fat people, so Ward had to double-go! Oh, and the fact that he's mute just makes him like.... URG! If I met him in real life, I'd totally uhhh.....mock him. That'd show him! Stupid Kiros and Ward!

Nobody from FF12 strikes me as good runners since everybody trots or gallops in that game. Seriously, if you had somebody follow them around banging coconuts together, it'd make a lot of sense. Penelo is one that I consider the slowest as well, since she's so....stocky. Awkward. She's also one of the slower ones in the game, stat-wise (well, basically she's no Vaan or Balthier). Marcus, on the other hand, seems slow because he's kinda lazy, but he's a thief, so he's gotta be fast. Plus, when he frees Blank from the Evil Forest, he and Blank get to Alexandria really friggin fast to save you all. Like, seriously. Your guys teleport to the city and Blank and Marcus haul ass through the forest, which isn't all that close to Alexandria, to save you maybe ten minutes after you arrive. They've gotta have insane speed

Very true! Although it's just because Penelo's frumpy more than anything else She does have rather large thighs though, so she probably would have strong legs, but not run-to-alexandria-in-10-minutes speed XD

Well, it seems that the low expectations for Rafa and Malak were well warranted. Hee at the ending.

Yeah, Bob played Malak... pretty much as he is in the game. He's a little exaggerated, but yeah, he's a douche and this team never really had a chance.

Hey! I was REALLY close with my picks for a change! I'm getting better at this! Or...maybe I just got lucky. Anyway, time to adjust some picks.
10th = Cid/Hilda. I still put these two as the unquestioned smartest team in the race, but the series of foot races and physical challenges in this leg proved that they are without a doubt also the weakest physically. They managed to squeak through the physical stuff, based mainly on the screw ups of some of the other teams, but most of the other teams have at least one good physical racer, and I think Cid/Hilda's unbalanced approach will find them lacking at a critical moment, maybe not this leg, but in the near future.
9th = Selphie/Irvine. These two failed to impress me. Their physical strength, probably their best asset, did not help them out much, they made mistakes, and more than once Irvine's coat hindered his progress and slowed him down, yet he still has not abandoned it. These two are setting themselves up for a big mistake that costs them the race.
8th = Celia/Lede. Probably the two toughest racers this season, given their inhuman natures, and fairly smart as well, yet I keep them low in the standings because they still don't understand the finer points of human interactions and the race. Because of their... peculiar behavior, they have the biggest targets on their backs. I don't think anyone is gunning for them just yet, but everyone is definitely giving them a suspicious eye.
7th = Setzer/Daryl. I put them up a little bit, because they do seem to be competent, observant, and level-headed racers. I think I might put them up even higher, pending the results of the second leg. But for now, I'm hedging my bets and keeping them middle/low.
6th = Vaan/Penelo. Vaan's little hair-brained schemes are only going to get them in trouble. Luckily Penelo is around to shoot down his dumber ideas, but this dynamic is already causing strain between these two. Time will tell if their relationship will deteriorate over time, or if they'll reach a turning point and start working together in the future.
5th = Godo/Yuffie. These two have been working together much better than I originally anticipated, which signals good things for this team. Yuffie is still a little ditzy and impetuous, but Godo manages to keep her focused without antagonizing her. Also, I have a feeling that Godo is exaggerating his physical weakness. After all, he IS at the top of the Pagoda, beaten only by Yuffie, despite his long inactive period.
4th = Lucil/Elma. Maybe they just had a bad leg, but if they continue in this pattern, they won't even crack the top three. They still have a lot of the elements that make a good team, it's just a matter of whether or not they can bring things together and start climbing out of the hole they're in.
3rd = Tidus/Wakka. These two aren't as dumb as they maybe could have been played, and their quickness and athleticism is certainly helping them out. I really doubt that these two will end up being a second Biran/Yenke. Granted, they aren't the brightest bulbs, but they know their own strengths and they play to them, and there's something to be said about that strategy.
2nd = Blank/Marcus. These two are proving their survivability and endurance already. With their strategy and skills and adaptability, these two are going to be tough to eliminate. Definite contenders for the final three, but I still wonder about their ability to win.
1st = Cloud/Aeris. A first leg win certainly bodes well for these two. However, my placement of them in first is a tentative placement, and can easily change. There are a lot of tough teams this season, and Cloud/Aeris will have to be almost perfect to emerge on top. So far, they've been pretty damn good, so we'll have to see if that trend continues.

All right. First leg's over, first two teams are gone. So here are my rankings, following Fleck's.
1. Blank & Marcus: I still think these two will win. They showed how well their physical strength and mental abilities will carry them, and they did indeed work extremely well together as a team on this first leg. They make informed decisions on the tasks they take and make sure it's right before they do it. I keep them as the winners for this alone, since both are physically and mentally astute.
2. Celia & Lede: I put these two in second place because it's clear they might be the villain team. They're relying on their looks to get them ahead, as well as their seductive abilities, and they're slowly finding out they don't work. However, that's okay, because they also have their incredible physical strength, which could serve them well for a while. I think they'll reach the F3, but come in second since they're obviously one of the villain teams.
3. Tidus & Wakka: These two lucked out in one of them facing another racer for the mental Roadblock. Against Yoko, I think Tidus would've failed, and failed miserably. Their physical strength may work for them for a while, just like Celia & Lede, but won't save them when a very mental task comes along. I now put them in the F3, but falling out due to the final memory task.
4. Godo & Yuffie: They did a lot better as a team than I thought. Fourth place is certainly a good start for them. Physical strength will be nothing for Yuffie, and I don't think Godo will have anything to worry about, either. I think speed will be Godo's weak point, though, and could hit them at an inopportune time. Till then, I think they'll slide by while some of the cannon fodder teams fall out, then turn it on when the stronger ones are left. But a mental task, another weak point of theirs, will knock them out just short of the F3.
5. Cloud & Aeris: Them? Winning? Really, Fleck? Just because of a first-leg victory? Oh, how soon we forget Tifa & Paine and Reno & Rude, both of whom also won the first leg and -- oh, wow! -- went on to get to eliminated early. Not saying the same will be true of these two, but you never know. I think they'll definitely breeze through much of the race on Cloud's physical and mental strength, but from her lack of doing anything at all, I think Aeris will be the weak point of this team. She'll be Amanda to Cloud's Kris -- he'll be the only threat on the team, while she'll be his appendage. Eventually, they'll be targeted with a delay point of some sort used only because someone wants Cloud out of the race, and they'll be gone, so I'm putting them in fifth place.
6. Lucil & Elma: I'll attribute this rough start to a bad leg, but they did surprisingly poorly at some of the early physical parts. Both got beaten at least once in the beach games, and Lucil lost repeatedly at the mental Roadblock. They are not at all as strong as I wrote them, and it's saddening. If they don't get turned around quickly, I could see them going out in sixth place and becoming the first decoy team.
7. Irvine & Selphie: They did well in the first half of the leg, but faltered on the Detour. Switching definitely hurt them. But that's okay. Both saved the world before, so I'm pretty sure they have the physical goods to at least get halfway through the race. But yeah, Irvine's coat will be a problem, but so will Selphie's excitable nature. So I think they'll leave us in seventh place, rounding out the Elimination Station teams.
8. Cid & Hilda: Their mental prowess will definitely give them a hand. It did on the second half of this leg, and definitely helped them arrive smack in the middle of the placements. It'll carry them past a few cannon fodder teams' eliminations, but then, their lack of physicality will finally rear its ugly head just like it did at the beach games, and the Fabools will find themselves going out in eighth place.
9. Setzer & Daryl: They may have recovered from their close call, but I still don't have all that much faith in them. If they're gonna keep relying on luck and/or taking gambles on things, they're an easy early boot. Plain and simple, until they change things up, I'm putting them in ninth place, leaving after at least one cannon fodder team I've put below them.
10. Vaan & Penelo: I was sorely disappointed in these two. They did not do well at all. Vaan's dumb ideas will throw them off, and while Penelo has been wise enough to shoot down some of his ideas, there's no way she'll be able to keep that up forever. In fact, unless something physical can come along and save them, I'll put them in tenth place and basically leaving next.
11. Malak & Rafa -- Eliminated on Leg 1: Indeed, the low expectations for them were dead on. They just couldn't work well together when it counted and didn't even have good physicality when they needed it. They were easy cannon fodder, and more's the pity (for them -- I'm sure the women of the race are thrilled about this). Sucks to be out early, but while I'm sad for Rafa, I'm NOT gonna miss Malak at all. What an asshole.
12. Kiros & Ward -- Eliminated on Leg 1: I really thought they'd make it farther. I'm shocked they were the first ones to go due to the mid-leg elimination twist. Probably even more shocked that it all came down to luck, not Ward's handicap. But alas, they leave before we can see how badly Ward's muteness would've hindered them. Sucks, too, because there are definitely at least two teams I'd rather have seen gone before them (and thankfully, one at least left right after they did).
. . . But these are just my rankings, which are subject to change episode-to-episode. How about everyone else's?
