Hey, all! I thought I'd offer a reader's perspective on the race and everyone's finishing positions! This is for episode seven!
In this episode of The Amazing Final Fantasy Race, the remaining teams left the world of Parasite Eve and raced through the world — or, I should say, worlds — of Kingdom Hearts. There, the teams were forced to deal with copyrights from the Final Fantasy series and Disney movies, as well as several tasks relating to them.
The Roadblock saw one team member building a gummi ship with his or her own hands using the parts provided. The ships didn’t need to be perfect, but they did need to look okay enough to fly. Teams with at least one member who had a lot of experience with mechanics did well with this challenge, while the more mechanically-challenged teams had trouble with it.
Also, the second non-Detour/non-Roadblock task on the entire race appeared on this leg. Teams had to figure out how to find and get through a hidden door in Wonderland to reach the clue in the Queen’s Courtyard. It proved to be quite challenging for some of the teams, as one team didn’t even bother shrinking to go through the door, but some of the other teams correctly figured out how to use the bottles provided to either grow or shrink and find the right door to go through.
The Detour had teams choosing between tasks in two different worlds — Barrels, which involved flying to Olympus Coliseum and completing two obstacle courses in which they had to break a number of barrels in a limited amount of time, and Branches, which involved flying to the Deep Jungle and sliding down a series of branches while avoiding low branches on the way, and then swinging across several vines to a small platform to get their next clue. Both tasks were physically demanding, but teams with more stamina were better off choosing Barrels, while teams with good balance were better off choosing Branches. Because both Detours were found in different worlds, changing them would be very costly.
The third and last of three Fast Forwards came into play on this leg. Teams going for it had to find ten postcards hidden in various places throughout Traverse Town. The team that went for it got a local to help them, but hit a snag when that local made a fatal attempt to stiff them. And then, bad luck struck that same team during this luck-based task when a postcard became too difficult to find.
Six teams have finally become five, and as the number of teams continues to dwindle, the teams have to rely on their smarts now more than ever. With that in mind, and with another team eliminated, which teams were thinking smart in episode seven?
Steiner and Beatrix: Finally, using a Fast Forward, the dating knights got first place! They opted for the Fast Forward and got a local moogle to help them out in exchange for Superslick. The team hit an unfortunate snag when that moogle proved himself to be greatly untrustworthy by attempting to rip them off and fatally poisoning himself in the process, and they ran into even more bad luck when, after finding nine postcards, they couldn’t find the tenth. But in the end, through remembering to search higher areas in the town, the team obtained the Fast Forward and got themselves to the Pit Stop and beat Shinra and Rufus in a very close race for first place.
Shinra and Rufus: The father and son really seemed to struggle on this leg, at first, with Shinra doing the Roadblock and putting together a shoddily-built gummi ship. Its poor build dropped them far behind the other teams heading to Wonderland, as it couldn’t fly as fast as the other teams’ ships. Shinra drank the wrong bottle to get through the door, destroying the Bizarre Room and some of the Queen’s Courtyard, but that didn’t seem to hurt them much. They chose the Barrels Detour and completed it quickly, and got some help from Yuna and Rikku with their gummi ship, which flew much better on its way to the Pit Stop. They got to the Pit Stop faster than the other teams by finding a secret shortcut the other teams hadn’t found. Then, they lost a very close footrace to the mat against Steiner and Beatrix and wound up in second place as a result. Nice job for this team.
Amarant and Lani: The coworkers raced well on this leg, with Amarant completing the Roadblock reasonably fast and Lani smartly begging for money while he was doing so. They were the last team to leave the Roadblock, but the fourth team to Wonderland. They correctly shrank down to make it into the Queen’s Courtyard, but instead broke down the talking door to do it (which didn’t get them penalized, shockingly). They chose the Branches Detour and finished it fast, taking an easy advantage of the mistake made by Fujin and Raijin and Auron and Jecht. They passed the two teams in front of them long enough to jump from last to third. Well done.
Yuna and Rikku: The cousins ran another good leg, with Rikku making good, quick work on the Roadblock and taking a shortcut in flying to Wonderland, giving them a big lead. They had a little trouble figuring out how to get into the Queen’s Courtyard, finally getting help from the talking doorknob, but they finished the task in a good amount of time. But they made it easier for Auron and Jecht to complete the task by forgetting to push the bed back into place to cover the hidden door. They chose the Barrels Detour and tore their way through it. They lost themselves a few minutes when Rikku stopped to repair Shinra and Rufus’s gummi ship, and made things a little bit worse for themselves by getting lost on the way to the Pit Stop, allowing Amarant and Lani to pass them. In the end, by stiffing Fujin and Raijin out of sharing their moving platform, they beat them and Auron and Jecht in what was nearly a three-way footrace and finished fourth, which isn’t too shabby.
Auron and Jecht: The old guys once again got lucky this leg — and in the worst possible way. Jecht completed the Roadblock fairly fast and got them heading for Wonderland in third. They got the Detour clue without shrinking (another thing I’m surprised didn’t result in a penalty) and chose Branches. They started out doing fairly well, but during the swinging portion, Jecht fell off the vines and into the river below and had to climb up and start again. This team would’ve been the last one out of the Detour had Raijin not made the same mistake (well, they were the last to leave the Detour, anyway, but it would’ve been by a long shot if Raijin hadn’t messed up), and in the end, it came down to the final footrace to the mat with Fujin and Raijin, in which Fujin suffered the misfortune of injuring her knee. Had that not happened, this team would’ve been eliminated.
Fujin and Raijin: What went wrong? Raijin falling off the vines at the Detour. That mistake lost them some time and allowed the trailing Amarant and Lani to pass them up. Yuna and Rikku, one of the two teams they tricked on the previous leg, then paid them back by not letting them get on the moving platform with them, leaving them to race Auron and Jecht to the mat. Add that to Fujin falling and hurting her knee on the final run to the mat, and you’ve got an elimination — and the third team to pull a first-to-worst. I must say, though, that I am very sad to see them go — they became the strongest team in the race after Edgar and Sabin were eliminated, and like the Figaro brothers, they would’ve deserved to win if they had done so.
