Fleck! I gots to know! Steam's "Autumn Sale" is going on and a game they recommended to me was "The Longest Journey" (and its...sequel, I think? Dreamscape?). I remember you talking about this game. It's half off, so $5. Worth it? Know if Dreamscape is worth it too?
Oh, and I made this thread for anybody else to chime in about any game recommendations or just a place to generally ask "Hey should I get this? Has anybody played it?"

It depends on what you like. The best part of TLJ is the world and the characters. The story is okay, nothing special, but the game has some of my favorite environments and characters. Everyone just has a ton of personality, which is good, because the majority of this game revolves around talking to them. And then talking to them again. And then running around aimlessly in circles rubbing every object in your inventory against every object on every screen until the next scene triggers. Then more talking, more characters, more talking, then more rubbing and aimless wandering.
Unfortunately, the real plot of the game doesn't kick off until like the third chapter, and the puzzles in the beginning are hard as fuck. The puzzles in the whole game are pretty rough, but I seem to recall the ones in the beginning being especially hard. So you have to slog through several hours of dialog and several hours of wandering, solving puzzles before anything actually happens, and even then the plot isn't that fantastic. Like I said, if you don't love talking to the characters and exploring the world, there isn't much to like about the game. But if you do like that, the game is pretty legit.
It's sequel Dreamscape was dumbed-down and rushed and unfinished. I love the main character Zoey and the puzzles are easier and the plot kicks off quicker, but the world feels so much smaller and less interesting. It still has a few good characters, but it divides its focus between three main protagonists and it just doesn't work. Not to mention the fact that it was supposed to be part one of a two part game and, last I checked, there is no part two. So I don't think Dreamscape is worth it. But for five bucks, I'd say give TLJ a try.

Hmmm....
THOUGHTS!
I've actually always had a soft spot for Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie so the fact that their sections have been expanded is awesome to me. The corridors and narrow streets make me nervous, because I'm afraid of having FF13's Endless Hallway Syndrome, but the beginning of FF7 in Midgar was always pretty linear, so I can't judge the whole game based on that. The combat looks nice, but having a Kingdom Hearts style combat system renders the Materia system almost completely irrelevant, since the whole thing was heavily dependent on the old RPG style, and the materia system remains one of my favorite magic/leveling systems in FF. But it seems like no one makes Triple-A turn-based combat anymore, so I guess I'll have to just live without. The emphasis on Cloud's douchiness and voice acting in the game makes me worried that they're going to tone down or eliminate a lot of the sillier parts of the game. But as long as they include all the events surrounding Corneo's Mansion and leave in the ability to date Barret on the GC gondola, I'll be reasonably content.
Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic. It's obviously going to be a true "remake" rather than an upgrade, so this new version is going to be largely incomparable to the original. Maybe that's a good thing though.

Yeah, the battle system intrigues me, but also scares me. The old style of loading up materia and choosing individual actions is the heart of Final Fantasy 7 combat, so while the idea of free-roam Kingdom Hearts format makes me happy, I hope we still control most of the battle. I don't want to play 40+ hours of Cloud. So I hope it takes some note from Star Ocean, perhaps.
Happy but scared of that trailer. But hey, Barret got some shades and wears them at night, so this is already 400% better than the original!

I'm certainly cautiously optimistic about the Final Fantasy VII Remake. I did like what I saw in the trailer. My main hope is that the game is fresh but retains at least some of the quirky charm of the original. This is a game in which the main character crossdressed, in which the characters spied on corporate executives from a vent accessed from a toilet, in which, before the final battle, the lead tells the party "Let's mosey." So, basically, what fleck said. I'm not expecting everything, but I want at least some of that goofy fun that made the game what it was. Oh, and it's probably a pipe dream, but I wouldn't mind actually still having an explorable world map where you can ride vehicles and stuff.
As far as recommendations go, I really don't have anything to ask about myself at the moment, as I already am backed up. However, I'd personally recommend most games from the Atelier series - I've really had fun recently playing them. Though I wouldn't recommend them for those that mind spending a lot of time doing stuff like item-crafting or world-building.

I can honestly say, with only a technical amount of shame, that I'll be buying a PS4 JUST TO PLAY THIS.
