An interesting look on the workings of a Star Ocean game. 3 is the only one in the series I HAVEN'T played, but only because I haven't found it available to pick it up. From what I understand though, it's similar to 1 and 2 in terms of its mechanics, and that there's a ton of characters to use, but you can only really get little more than half in a single playthrough. Star Ocean 2 was an offender in this case more than 1. This is good and bad - it's good that it allows them to focus on the main plot and characters more, but it's bad because it means that many of the characters don't really have a purpose or any back story whatsoever. I think it's a problem with Star Ocean in general though, with the exception of the lead and maybe one other character, most characters don't have much background story, even if they're heavily involved in the plot.
Also, no playable Welch? That's a shame. I loved her dynamic in the first 2 games. Pretty much God taking on the form of a bratty little girl, getting involved in people's adventures for the lulz.

Welch is your inventing menu person in SO3. So no, not playable.
In SO3, you can get 8/10 characters every time you play. There are five missable characters and while you can always get Adray, of the other four, you can only get two. Which, to me, is quite stupid. Granted, I think some of the characters are absolutely pointless, as I say in the TC. But Nel! Ugh! I don't know WHY she's a secret character. I mean, I know it's that she's secret in the end. She's mandatory for a long time, but then it changes. She's probably my favorite character in that game, so maybe I'm just biased or something, but it's weird that she's not a mandatory character since she's so important to 80% of the plot.

And yeah, Nel at least gets leveled up. When Sophia and Peppita try to join in, like 4/5 of the way into the game, they haven't leveled one bit. "Do you want Nel, who you've been leveling for hours and hours and has a bunch of skills, or level 1 Peppita and Sophia, who have NO skills whatsoever and need to be taught everything from the ground up?" Seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

Yeah, I hate that they all start at Level 1. For some, like Sophia and Peppita, I get it, but people like Adray, who supposedly have some combat experience, or Albel, it makes no dang sense.
Fayt, Cliff, and Nel are the cast. Maria is only TC because she's important to that bullshit fourth-dimension plot. Stupid plot ruining a good plot.
