Okay, folks! It's time to kick off another blitzball league! We have a newcomer this round, so a big welcome to Rich! Hope you enjoy the game! And just to throw you in the deep-end, Round 1 you are facing the Luca Goers! They are...how do you say it...hard. They're one of the NPC teams, so they play the same line-up every single time, and they're dang good at it. While everybody in the league is Level 30 now, these guys are Level 32. So...good luck! The match list is posted. You are, again, playing against yourselves in the first round (except Rich, who will play the Goers--Aurochs are out this round). Good luck everybody! Get me your first round line-ups (if you haven't already) and we'll get started as soon as possible! (And Rich, I need your team and player data as well, so send it over once your teams are created). EDIT: Oh, and here is the link: challonge.com/blitzleague05

Looks like you're up against me as your first human opponent, Rich! The Magic Missiles tend to either dominate or get dominated, it largely depends on the enemy team's dynamic, as they're the only team that's built around the game's passing mechanic. Successful consecutive passes build up a shot bonus on the next goal attempt, so winning by ball control is feasible. But results have shown it's probably not the best way to win

Man, NS didn't even manage to beat TME when TME rested all but one offensive player (to prep for the upcoming blitz of LO/GB/LG... For shame.
...Then again, maybe they're becoming more like oldschool Loveless...

Okay, as Wyvern has seen, the results for Round 1 are up! Right now, we're kind of in an awkward position. I might be starting faster than Rich was prepared for, since I'm still waiting on his Round 1 line-ups, but he's playing the Goers (NPC team) in the first round, so it doesn't really affect us. Still, I'd like to start Round 2 as soon as possible. Was hoping for tomorrow, but since we're off track, I'll say maybe Thursday? So...
All but Rich: Try to get me your Round 2 line-ups by Thursday.
Rich: Get me your Round 1 and Round 2 line-ups by Thursday. I'd recommend you get me Round 1 asap, that way there MIGHT be a chance I can upload those results and you can see how things went before you make your Round 2 line-ups.
SPOILERS:
Round 1, nothing terribly unusual. The teams I expected to win, won. TME and NS tied, which is kind of interesting since TME dominated last round and NS did almost the opposite of domination, so seeing them neck-and-neck is interesting. Granted, most of that is because they had a defender clash and really nothing happened at all.
STAMINA:
I'm taking over stamina, so here it is! My program is computing it for me, so if it's wrong, tell me, because it'll ALWAYS be wrong...but I think this is all 100% perfect.

Rich got a major stomach bug, so that explains the hold-up... He should be recovered shortly. I only just found that out last night and put the pieces together this morning.

Ah, gotcha. Okay, well we'll still aim for Thursday, but the game between MAR and MAG may be slightly delayed.
Get well soon, Rich!

Hey guys! Sorry, the flu is going around my group of friends and I had to take a couple days off. I sent Bob my lineup for Round 1 today and I'll send Round 2 in a sec; I'm still trying to get caught up. Gabe told me a little bit about the mechanics of the game, like about the handling bonus for multiple passes. Let me know if there is anything else I need to be doing to help this run smoothly and not hold anything up.

And I'll get those games uploaded as soon as possible, but I sent you a PM about a change you need to make to your roster. Since the character you need to fix is your goalie, I'll give you a quick rundown about goalies, since they're the most un-FFX-Blitzball of all things here.
Goalie Bonus:
As players take actions, they will receive a random bonus from the goalie. Only problem: that bonus might not be the bonus they want. So, for instance, when they take a shot at the goal, they will receive a bonus to shot (SHT), pass (PAS), endurance (END), attack (ATK), or block (BLK). Since they are shooting, the only bonuses that will affect them are SHT and maybe END, if there are opponents trying to tackle them. So there's a 40% chance that they receive a helpful buff.
These bonuses come from your goalie. If you receive a SHT bonus and your goalie has a SHT of 6, then you'll receive +6 to your shot (all numbers are randomized in addition to this).
So when you fix your goalie, keep this in mind because the goalie is basically the backbone of the team, in my opinion. The goalie bonus is what makes your team different from another, essentially.
Recommendation:
I recommend your goalie consider bonuses to SHT and PAS. As controller of the ball, your player can stop anywhere on the field and say, "Hey, I got a SHT bonus. I might want to shoot right about now since this wears off next turn." They may or may not shoot, but they get the option and evaluate their shot with this in mind. Likewise with passes. Things that are prompted by another's actions (END, BLK, and ATK) have the same probabilities of happening, but because they can't control when they happen, I'd say that they basically have a lower chance of happening.
Hope that helps!
I'll be simming games tonight or tomorrow. Good luck, all!
I decided to sim the games. Still waiting on Rich, but we should be up to date very soon. I have his line-ups for the games, I just need his goalie fixed. I'm going to be out of town on Saturday, so next round will be Sunday. get me line-ups before then!
Program Updates:
It finally annoyed me too much. If you read the Merc vs Goer game, it is very confusing (and upsetting, if you're me). Spoilers for the game follow, but I doubt anybody really cares. See, Abus scored a goal to put the Goers only a single point behind the Mercs at 4:59 in the second half. So, that means the Mercs won, right? Well, no. The game went on, with Abus scoring the tying goal at 4:06. ...huh?
This glitch isn't a glitch, nor is it uncommon. I've noticed it for awhile, but haven't cared enough to fix it. This annoyed me enough to find the problem. Turns out, I had minutes counting up, as normal, but seconds counting down. So it was going, 3:01, 3:00, 4:59, 4:58... Minutes went up, seconds down. So 4:59 was actually 4:01 and 4:06 was actually 4:54. Damn. Tie game.
Another fix was that I noticed there was no asterisk (noting a goalie bonus had taken place) for getting an attack/tackle bonus, yet all other bonuses were marked (remember: endurance bonus is marked after the "X on defense" line). I decided to fix this. I don't know if you guys even check that closely, but I think it's only fair to output it. That way, you can maybe start to understand why Sazh seems like the bees knees in the GW v. GB game.
SPOILERS:
Mercs vs Goers. Damn, so close! We almost had 'em. A tie is good, but ugh! Mercs were up by 2 most of the game. Stupid Abus!
SM7 tried a new formation, and it may have paid off! They took down the Shades, who tied the Mads last round. Though, SM7 lost to the Magics (match pending against MMs), so we'll just have to wait and see. SM7 might've gotten their act together, likewise with the Magics, but who knows!
Grizzlies took down the Guests after also trying a new formation.
Finally, the match of the round was Loveless vs Mads. After their rivalry last tournament, the Mads were definitely looking for revenge, and it seems they got it, taking down Loveless.
I'll modify this post as soon as I get the two missing MM games, then we'll be 100% up to date!

I didn't realise that goalie bonuses were considered in the AI's decision making for shot and pass! That makes quite a bit of difference, although both of my goalies are pretty well rounded in an attempt to get slightly more consistent benefits, rather than lucky spikes. I don't know which is a better option to go for though.
I'm hoping SM7 can follow up on a decent start, but they have a tendency to start struggling after their first couple of games for some reason.

You out-guessed me this time, Count... congratulations! My teams seem to have been thorns in SM7's side for a while now... but you got this one! Good job.
I would also add "suck it, Loveless," but I have too much respect for the team, and I know that in three rounds, NS plays them, and things might not go so well if I poke the bear, so to speak.
Also, No. 288! Blockin' shots like a mofo.

Yeah, SHT and PAS are considered by the AI, as suggested way back when by Wyvern (the "I'm feelin' it" effect). What makes it interesting is the random. Get a high number and the randomization really starts to work against you, especially if you have a HIGH risk level. They'll estimate a shot by getting a good number, then when they take the shot, it randomizes a second number that isn't so lucky, so the goalie grabs it and gives it to his team. Always a risk.
But yeah, the all-rounder approach to goalies can also be nice for teams that have decent stats already that might just want small boosts. For me though, the extreme spikes are what cause the most damage. To give away my team dynamics a tad, both of my teams have goalies with extreme bonuses in categories the rest of the team is lacking in. It really helps out, especially since the Grizzlies' main goalie, Galuf, has such a nice ATK that he makes a decent defender when needed.

Thanks for the info about goalies. My thinking was to keep my goalie well-rounded so that no matter which character got a bonus, it would at least be a decent one. I didn't want a player in a blocking opportunity to get a goalie bonus only to have it affect his stats 10-15 points. My thinking is that when if the applicable goalie bonus kicks in, I want it to be a good one. I'll give it another look over and get back to you.

Okay, this league is back on track. To give a quick update about the Marlboro Mayhem! SPOILERS: Their first game against the Goers was a flop, but it did show that Jecht's son does not disappoint as a blitzer. Their second game against the Magic Missiles proved that he's not the only one to fear. They effectively stomped the Missiles and are now in a four-way tie for fourth place. So keep your eye on those guys--they're no pushovers! EDIT: Line-ups for Round 3 by tomorrow would be great. Sim one last game before I go back to work on Monday! ...Work. Blah.

Results are up! Check 'em out! Get me next line-ups by Wednesday and I'll sim Thursday!
SPOILERS:
....Dangit, Fleck. Before your games happened, we had all ties! Why couldn't you just TIE!? TIE ALREADY! But yeah, silly results. Oh, and then there was Loveless beating SM7 with their own balls. Not blitzballs, either. Turn your head and cough balls.

Okay, so what's with Fujin getting a goal? That was either A. Beast mode + Luck +Bonuses or B. I... I don't know... her SHT is 1 (not to give anything away or anything, but...)
