Yeah, when it comes in I'll probably have it as some kind of tournament, using the played characters we have. Once that's over though it'll probably just be random matches uses any old characters people have made. I don't think people should be restricted to only designing builds for characters they play - the more participants there are, the more variation and interesting betting there'll be.
As for warrior/black mage/summoner, chances are you'll have summoner be reasonably useful whatever you focus stats on, but either warrior or black mage would be weaker. Summoners are better suited to mage classes, but Ifrit scales on strength to a fairly reasonable degree too, so if you got lucky and summoned him a strength person could do some decent damage.

Okay, so remember when I was writing up all that stuff about the different classes? Well, most of that information I obtained by building different versions of the same job class and then having them fight with each other. By that method, I tried to create the "ideal" build for each job class. But ninjas have a bit of an exception that I hadn't really considered, namely the fact that they evade like crazy. When a ninja is pitted against another ninja, the higher evade kinda cancels out, since they both have it. So when I said that a ninja with high HP does pretty well, I meant that it does pretty well against other builds of ninja, but a balanced ninja generally beat the higher HP ninja. So I went with a balanced ninja when I did my testing across different classes.
Anyway, long story short, I went back to the high HP ninja and tested it more thoroughly against other job classes and it does awesome. Kind of umm... too awesome. If you don't believe me, put 20 monk level ups on a straight ninja and then try to beat it. The only classes I could find that could beat it were: other ninjas, white mages, dark knights, and occasionally gamblers (since gamblers occasionally will beat anything). That might not sound all that impressive, but when one job class can routinely trounce 11 of the 13 main job classes (and I do mean trounce. The ninja generally had 1000-1500 HP left at the end of the fight), it might be a problem.
Of course, I'm still working with straight classes, so perhaps this can be easily sorted out if you mix classes. I'll leave it to you to decide what to do. I'm not sure if downgrading a ninja is the right answer at this point, but I did want to bring that to your attention.

Ok, that's fine. I could just lower the evasion chance to 20% or 15%, and see if that does the trick! Either that or make them take a little more damage when they don't evade. Mixed classes might solve the problem a bit, but it probably does need toning down. I think there might be a glitch with the evasion rates though, as it seems to happen way more often than it should. Excusing a switch bonus, evasion should only happen for 1 in 4 hits, and it frequently appears to happen multiple times in a row. I cleaned up my code a bit before I went, and I might have caused it not to remove the ninja evasion bonus after a turn. I'm at home now, so I can add add in a reset of the evasion bonus variable at a certain point just to be sure. My Vanille character won about half the time against the Ninja as it is though. She's a sab/blackmage/whitemage. Edit: Uploaded a new one with what should be a fix to an evasion bug if it existed. Can't be bothered to look through my code to find out if there was a bug with it, but it seems that way. Hopefully it'll make a difference. blitzball.goatpen.org/miniarena/files/
